Renewing Focus And Aligning Your Actions With What Matters Most
The Power of Honest Check-Ins
There are times in life and work when everything feels overwhelming. As a working parent and leadership coach, I often notice clients (and myself!) trying to juggle too many responsibilities without slowing down to reflect on why we’re moving at lightning speed and how it’s moving us forward. Some mornings, even small decisions feel heavy, and it’s hard to remember why you started in the first place.
The first step to renewed focus is an honest check-in with yourself. Take a beat, and ask yourself:
What is truly important to me right now?
Which goals and habits are working for me, and which are not?
How have my priorities changed over the past few months?
How do I want to show up for my team, my family, and myself?
These questions can feel uncomfortable because they force us to face truths we may have been avoiding. But it’s exactly in these moments of discomfort that clarity emerges. You start to notice that your energy and effort might not be going toward what matters most, and that awareness is the catalyst for meaningful change.
Why Awareness Precedes Action
Renewed focus is not about doing more, but about doing the right things consistently. Results don’t show up without action, and action without awareness can be meaningless if we’re not careful. When you pause to reflect on your priorities, you create a foundation that ensures every action moves you closer to your goals.
For example, a client of mine realized she was spending hours on emails and administrative tasks that felt urgent but didn’t actually move her leadership or career goals forward. In fact, this work was holding her back from meaningful projects, connection, and opportunity. By identifying this and intentionally scheduling deep work sessions and focus time, she gained clarity, momentum, and progress she hadn’t seen in months. Perhaps you have your own version of "busy work" that's keeping you from the work that truly matters…those projects, conversations, or creative pursuits that would actually transform your career or bring you closer to the leader you want to become.
Practical Tips to Renew Focus
1. Schedule Reflection Moments
Even five to ten minutes a day for quiet reflection can help you realign with what matters. For a lot of us, it might look like a few minutes of silence in the car or taking an intentional pause before opening the laptop. In an ideal world, use this time to journal or meditate, but you can also simply just ask yourself what needs your attention most.
2. Prioritize Ruthlessly
Identify one or two areas where your focus will have the biggest impact. Let less critical tasks wait or delegate them. This ensures that your energy goes toward high-value actions instead of spreading yourself too thin for tasks that might be holding you back.
3. Build Mini Systems
Small, repeatable routines create structure and consistency. This could include reviewing your priorities at the start of each week, setting daily intentions, or tracking key metrics. Systems keep your focus from drifting even during busy or chaotic periods.
4. Reevaluate Regularly
Life is constantly changing. Make check-ins a habit—monthly or quarterly—to ensure your focus remains aligned with evolving goals and responsibilities.
5. Take Micro-Actions
Focus on small, manageable steps that move the needle. Even minimal, consistent effort compounds over time, creating momentum that feels sustainable rather than overwhelming.
Renewed Focus as a Leadership Tool
Renewed focus is especially critical for leaders. When you model intentional prioritization and clarity, your team feels the ripple effect. They notice your presence, your ability to follow through, and your ability to align energy with outcomes. This clarity not only benefits your personal goals but strengthens your professional influence and leadership impact.
